AbstractA normal mode analysis was carried out for a part of the ice structure, a water molecule with its four nearest neighbours linked through hydrogen bonding, as a nine-body problem. Force constants for the hydrogen bonding were taken into consideration. The absorption bands of ice at about 800 cm[- 1] is due to "hindered rotational motion" of water molecules and that near 200 cm[-1] due to stretching vibration of hydrogen bonds, i.e. "hindered translational motion" of water molecules.
