AbstractThe force exerted by ice is a factor that must be taken into consideration in the design of many structures in Canada. Although the problem has been with us for many years, there is still not available to engineers the information required topredict these forces with a satisfactory degree of confidence. During the past few years, considerable knowledge and experience has been accumulated concerning the properties of ice and the forces that it can exert. The Snow and Ice Subcommittee of the National Research Council's Associate Committee on Geotechnical Research considered that it would be useful to bring this knowledge and experience together through the holding of a conference. The papers and discussion presented to the conference are contained in this proceedings.
