AbstractThis paper presents the results of a literature survey on initiatives taken to move from prescriptive building regulations to performance-based regulations. It describes the steps required for developing performance-based codes. It outlines a set of objectives based on a combination of international formulations, some of the performance design criteria for quantifying the desired fire safety objectives, and some of the existing fire safety design tools for quantifying the performance objectives. Last, it discusses the design documentation needed for approval of the fire safety design.
