AbstractThe Ottawa River Project, a 5-year study of the distribution and transport of mercury in a stretch of the Ottawa River, is summarized. Significant observations include the rapid clearance of mercury from the sediments (half-line on the order of 1 year), the utility of partition coefficients for the description of mercury distribution between sediment and water, the use of plants as indicators of inorganic and organic forms of mercury in water, and the general predictability of methylmercury levels in fish.
