AbstractThe value of laboratory studies of the properties of undisturbed peat is limited by the complexity of the material and by sampling difficulties. There is consequently a real need for full-scale field testing for strength and compressibility of the natural peat. Fortunately, the Mer Bleue peat bog, which is located within a reasonable distance of the Building Research Centre, contains a rather common class of peat and is therefore an ideal location for field studies. This report describes the area, indicates the most suitable location for study, and outlines the nature of the proposed tests.
