AbstractThis paper reviews the mechanisms of hydrated Portland cement paste creep in relation to the role of water. An alternating current impedance analyzer was coupled with a miniature loading system to follow real-time microstructural changes due to sustained load. Various pre-drying treatments, including use of solvent exchange methods, were used to probe the sensitivity of the creep process to microstructural change and the presence or absence of moisture. Characterization of the water in the paste was made using a controlled environment differential thermogravimetric technique.
