AbstractThe present report describes a method of preparing and testing undisturbed unconfined compression test specimens from block samples. Tests showed that the specimens failed on clearly defined shear planes which intersected the bedding planes of the varves. Observations in the field of the heights at which failure took place in vertical faces cut in the clay indicated that a shear strength value of one half the unconfined compressive strength of the varved clay was a reasonable one for use in stability design calculations.
