AbstractPermafrost in the subarctic exists in close and complex interrelation with many climatic and terrain factors. The subarctic is considered to include all of the discontinuous permafrost zone and the part of the continuous zone situated south of the treeline. Permafrost increases in extent progressively from south to north in the subarctic and also with increasing elevation in mountainous regions. Climate is the most important factor influencing the formation and existence of permafrost and controls the broad pattern of its occurrence and distribution. Terrain conditions, such as relief, vegetation, drainage, snow cover, soil type, and glacier ice are responsible for local variations within this broad pattern.
