AbstractEvaporation rates from plane snow and ice surfaces were measured under controlled conditions inside a cold room. The effects of vapour pressure differences, wind velocity, surface roughness and changing approach conditions on evaporation rates were investigated. It was found that the Sverdrup formula checked reasonably well under the stable air conditions encountered in these experiments.
