AbstractTo investigate the performance of current emergency ventilation strategies for an existing road tunnel in the event of a fire, a research project is being conducted by the Fire Risk Management Program of the Institute for Research In Construction. The research study consists of two phases: a numerical modelling phase and an ex-perimental phase. The numerical phase is using CFD models to study smoke ventilation in the tunnel. The experimental phase will provide data to calibrate the CFD models for this application. The primary objectives of the research project are: a) to assess and validate the ability of emergency ventilation strategies to control smoke spread and minimize the impact of smoke on tunnel users; and b) to recommend guidelines for improving the ventilation operation to maximize intervention effectiveness.Solvent, a CFD model, [1] was used to model the venti-lation scenarios. The current paper presents the initial efforts to validate the CFD model against onsite flow measurements conducted in the tunnel. The CFD model includes aerodynamically?significant physical features of the tunnel and was customized to provide general roughness replicating the actual roughness in the tunnel.
