AbstractThe effectiveness of 57 sealers of 12 generic groups has been evaluated on eight types of concrete substrates (water/ cement ratio, air entrainment, curing were the variables). The benefits of water curing and low water cement ratio were clearly apparent. The influence of the substrate on the performance of sealers was very significant. Wide variation in the level of waterproofing ability of the sealers was found. Sixty-five percent of the tested sealers did not penetrate the concrete to a measurable extent and have to be considered as coatings.
