AbstractBased largely on the results of research conducted since 1967, this note provides 31 recommendations for designing new stairs and improving existing ones. The recommendations address step geometry, tread surfaces, lighting, handrails and other considerations. An annotated bibliography provides suggestions for further reading in the areas of construction, studies, and evacuation.
