AbstractDuring the past year a reappraisal of the mechanical strength of Leda clay under low effective confining stresses has resulted in a new appreciation for the mechanisms leading to slope instabilities. Small microfissures existing within the apparently intact clay give ris, under low stresses, to dilatant behaviour and predominantly 'frictional' shearing rseistance as the material shears into small nodules or blocks.
