AbstractResource conservation and concern for the environment will encourage utilization of wastes and by-products and recycling of materials. An understanding of their properties and processing requirements and overall economy is necessary before they can be utilized. The demand is increasing for products with improved properties and special applications. New composite organic and inorganic materials containing fibres offer certain advantages over others. To predict durability with confidence, the basic processes that occur during exposure and the micro-environmental factors within a material must be understood. Standard testing methods adopted on the basis of research experience, simplicity, economy, available equipment and ease of measurement have generally proven to be satisfactory. Some cases, however, require specialized techniques. The long- term effects of man-made pollutants on buildings are largely unknown. Techniques to measure the chemical constituents of pollutants and the development of accelerated methods would be needed to predict their effect on buildings. Reducing air infiltration into buildings saves energy but can also create health hazards by concentrating indoor air pollutants. To formulate standards for air quality, pollutants must be systematically studied and controlled.
