AbstractHOTCAN 3.0 is a computer model for estimating the design heat loss and annual space heating requirement of residences and small buildings that do not require simultaneous heating and cooling. The guide explains some of the algorithms used in the program and gives a brief introduction to using the program as a design aid. The program uses a month-by-month calculation technique. Steady-state heat loss calculations for above grade heat losses are used. Improved models for below grade heat losses and utilization of solar and internal gains are included, based on methods developed at the National Research Council of Canada. The input to the program defines the house envelope by such values as the component and sub-component areas and R- values, envelope tightness and air change rates, and window geometry. The program output includes the design heat loss, the thermal load on a daily basis for each month, the corresponding solar and internal gains, and the space heating load.
