AbstractA field method of determining the free water content of snow by measuring the density to which wet snow can be compacted was investigated. Preliminary results indicate that water content of snow can be estimated within + 3.16 per cent, 70 per cent of the time, once the final compacted density is known. Further experiments will be necessary before this method can be accepted as a simple, objective test for the field classification of wet snow.
