AbstractH in control (of the electrons): The bond strength of CO on small cationic cobalt clusters, as indicated by the C—O stretching band in the IR spectrum, can be precisely controlled by coadsorption of H₂ molecules. Each coadsorbed H atom reduces the electron density available for back-donation by about 0.09–0.25 electrons, depending on cluster size.
