AbstractA performance survey has been carried out on 108 concrete tower silos founded on weak, compressible marine clays east of Montreal in an area 150 X 60 km. A performance classification was developed based on the results of the survey, the calculated factor of safety against a bearing capacity failure, measured settlement, and tilt. A factor of safety equal to or greater than 2.5 provided a design that performed well. The presence of a deep, strong, desiccated crust reduces settlement and tilt.
