AbstractProtective measures against snow avalanches must be effective, practical, and as economical as possible. The information concerning the objectives of an avalanche defence, the terrain, and the characteristics of the avalanches, required for the design of the defence system, is outlined. A discussion is presented of the economical and operational factors that must be considered in the analyses of alternative defences and in choosing that optimum method.
