AbstractHeat budget observations show that sensible heat loss accounts for most of the latent heat released during freezing of an exposed, shallow-water layer in the high Arctic in January. Combined evaporation and sensible heat losses were about four times larger for this flooding situation than expected in neutral conditions. Empirical and semi-empirical equations are derived for estimating the components of the heat flux from meteorological parameters.
