AbstractTwo fire tests on structural steel columns protected by standard gypsum wallboard held in place with sheet steel column covers are described. The tests showed that sheet steel column covers are able to retain the gypsum board for much longer periods of fire exposure than other mechanical fastening methods. The fire endurance classifications developed were 1 1/2 hr and 2 hr, for two layers of 1/2-in. and two layers of 5/8-in. standard wallboard, respectively.
