AbstractThe infrared luminescence spectrum of the vibronic laser material KZn₁₋ₓCoₓF₃ with x<0.15 has been studied by Fourier transform spectroscopy under argon laser photoexcitation. With samples in a magnetic field (0–7T), effects of field configuration and strength on the luminescence were investigated and g-factors were obtained. Other zero-field luminescence results obtained include lifetime and effects of Co concentration, Ni impurity level, sample temperature (8–300 K), and pump laser power and wavelength (457.9–514.5 nm). The results provide a detailed understanding of the low lying electronic properties of the material, thus indicating the optimum conditions needed for laser operation. Since the data identifies a resonant energy transfer process between Ni²⁺ and Co²⁺ ions in this material, deliberate Ni doping in addition to Co would improve laser performance.
