AbstractDue to the increase in vehicle traffic and limited real estate, the construction and complexity of road tunnels are increasing substantially throughout the world. Compared to tunnels for other modes of transport, fire safety problems in road tunnels are more challenging due to specific features of their infrastructure, nature of traffic using them and insufficient safety rules on vehicles. Following a number of recent life-loss fires and potential terrorism threats, road tunnel fire safety measures are being questioned.
