AbstractAn earlier paper has indicated the extent and magnitude of the peat consolidation problem and presents a review of the rather extensive literature on settlement studies of soft foundation soils, particularly peats. Study has revealed the difficulties inherent in attempting standard consolidation tests on peats, particularly the very fibrous ones. The non-homogeneity of the material as well as the unusually large settlements necessitated some minor modifications to the usual test procedures.
