AbstractThermal methods were applied to investigate the influence of CaC1[2] on the hydration of tricalcium silicate from a few minutes to a month. Both TGA and DTA methods showed a good correlation for the estimation of Ca(OH)[2] at different degrees of hydration. In presence of CaC1[2] the dormant period was reduced, and with 5% it was reduced from 4 to 2 h. The extent of hydration at 6 h in terms of estimated Ca( OH)[2] was in the order C[3]S + 4% CaC1[2] > C[3]S + 1% CaC1[ 2] > C[3]S + 0% CaC1[2] and at 30 days C[3]S + 1% CaC1[2] > C[3]S + 0% CaC1[2] > C[3]S + 4% CaC1[2]. In terms of the disappearance of C[3]S, however, the extent of hydration at 6 h or 30 days was in the order C[3]S + 4% CaC1[2] > C[3]S + 1% CaC1[2] > C[3]S + 0% CaC1[2]. The results indicate that in presence of higher percentages of CaC1[2], C[3]S hydrates to form C-S-H with a higher CaO/SiO[2] ratio.
