A note on the use of standard ITTC wave spectra at AVMRI

Series titleLaboratory Memorandum
AbstractThe 1978 ITTC recommends the use of two standard wave spectrum formulations when only the significant wave height and average wave period are available. These are a 2-parameter Bretschneider form for open ocean and a JONSWAP form with = 3.3 for fetch-limited areas. Unfortunately, the contants given in the ITTC proceedings are not quite correct for the JONSWAP form. A more serious problem is that the JONSWAP spectrum does not have the correct average period since the T-sub1 computerd by the spectral moments differs from the T-sub1 value in the JONSWAP equation by about 8 percent. The purpose of this note is to clarify the situation and to recommend modified ITTC standard spectra for use by ITTC.
