AbstractPrevious concepts and models related to hydrated portland cement are discussed and several recent experimental observations which cannot be explained by the models are listed. The progress of research is outlined and it is pointed out how certain techniques were not satisfactory for studying hydrated portland cement. A new model is introduced that can explain areas which have long been considered anomalous. Data obtained both from adsorption and length change phenomena and from variation of mechanical properties with relative humidity are used in the development of this model. Based on the new model, conclusions and predictions are offered for such parameters as shrinkage and creep.
