Differential thermal investigation of the system tricalcium silicate : calcium lignosulfonate : water in the presence of tricalcium aluminate and its hydrates

AbstractThe hydration kinetics of tricalcium silicate (C[3]S) in the presence of calcium lignosulfonate (CLS) and various other additives is followed by DTA, through an estimation of the CA(OH)[2] formed: Hydration of C[3]S is completely inhibited in the presence of 0.5 to 0.8 per cent CLS. Addition of 5 per cent tricalcium aluminate (C[3]A) is sufficient to promote the hydration of C[3]S, slowly at first and normally after 3 days. The hexagonal phase containing a mixture of 4CaO.Al[2]O[3].13H[2]O and 2CaO.Al[2] O[3].8H[2]O is less efficient than C[3]A in counteracting the inhibitive action of CLS, the cubic phase (3CaO.Al[2]O[ 3].6H[2]O) being practically ineffective. The inhibitive influence of CLS is more pronounced when added to a mixture of C[3]S and C[3]A pre-hydrated for a few minutes. The results are explained on the basis of the extent of irreversible uptake of CLS in the order C[3]A > hexagonal phase > cubic phase.
