AbstractComputer simulation studies of 27Al nuclear spin flip-induced dephasing of R1 optical transitions in ruby are presented. Non-exponential echo intensity decays of the form I = I0exp − (4t/Tm)x were obtained. Good agreement between experimental and theoretical Tm's was obtained for transitions with spin Sg=-1/2 and Sg=-3/2 in the ground state assuming a nearest-neighbour flip rate of 20 kHz. However calculated x values differed from experiment by ˜ 15% for Sg=-3/2 and by ˜45% for Sg=-1/2 . Possible limitations of the simulation are discussed in the light of these disagreements.
