AbstractFairly simplified theories of heat transfer can be used to explain, in a qualitative manner, the influence of tunnel lining materials on performance. Improvements in the insulating capability of these materials are conducive to rapid flame spread. It is recommended that the lining used to protect the lid should provide a more uniform thermal environment within the tunnel than exists at present in order to minimize differences between ceiling and floor test results.
