AbstractThe central aim of this paper is to show that an understanding of the response of the rock material to water jets, be it plain, abrasive entrained, cavitating or pulsed jets, is very important in the design of the nozzles for efficient drilling, deep slotting or fragmentation. Sample results, taken from the extensive laboratory and field investigations on drilling and slotting of rocks with rotating high speed plain water jets on a variety of rock samples, obtained over a number of years, are presented in this paper to emphasize this point.
