AbstractLaboratory measurements of the electro-kinetic potential, using the electro-osmotic technique, in undisturbed samples of soil have shown that the potential increases directly with increasing sensitivity. Such measurements were carried out on samples of Leda clay, a marine clay taken from various sites in the Ottawa region of the St. Lawrence lowlands of eastern Canada. The results of the study highlight differences between the sensitive nature of Leda clay as opposed to its counterpart, the sensitive marine clay of Norway. In Norway there appears to be a direct relationship between pore water salt content and sensitivity; in the marine clays in the Ottawa region such a relationship does not hold, indicating that factors other than pore water salt content determine sensitivity.
