AbstractAnalysis of the use of the Babinet compensator in conjunction with white light, for the measurement of stress induced relative retardation in glasses, revealed the equivalency of the normalised spectral birefringence of crystalline quartz and the stress optical coefficient of common glasses. Justification of the use of white light on a restricted basis and a brief description of a common dispersion formula for quartz, fused silica, and soda-lime- silica glass is presented.
