AbstractThe present paper traces short- and long-term effects of enhancing durability on the construction sector and the rest of the economy. While short term effects may be negative, in the form of reduced output and employment levels in the material manufacturing industries, the long-term effects are expected to be positive. These effects will vary according to the market structure of material manufacturing firms, i. e., whether they are "competitive" firms or "monopolies".
