AbstractOwing to its good structural performance, especially in strength and durability, high-strength concrete (HSC) yields increased usable space in a building because columns can be of smaller diameter than those of normal-strength concrete (NSC). It is, however, an advantage that needs to be carefully weighed. Compared to NSC, HSC columns have a lower fire resistance, which is attributable to its thermal and mechanical properties. To exacerbate its lower fire resistance, HSC can also undergo extensive spalling upon exposure to fire. Fortunately, there are ways to improve the fire performance of HSC, for example by adding fibres to the concrete.
