AbstractA review is presented of the observations made by the Snow and Ice Section of the Division of Building Research, National Research Council , Canada, on the exchange of heat and moisture between the atmosphere and snow, water and soil surfaces, and on the ground thermal regime and the influence of surface characteristics on that regime. Information is presented as well on the average size of the components of the heat balance in mid-winter at Ottawa, Canada, with comments pertaining to the development of instrumentation.
