AbstractThe rate constants for hydrogen atom abstraction from tri-n-butylgermanium hydride by the 5-hexenyl radical, k 5, have been measured in octane as solvent at temperatures varying from 233 to 393 K. Over this temperature range the data can be represented by log k 5 (M -1 s -1) = (8.44 ± 0.47) - (4.70 ± 0.62)/θ, where θ = 2.3RT kcal/mol. At ambient temperatures this germanium hydride is only about 1/20 as reactive toward primary alkyl radicals as the corresponding tin hydride. This should make it a useful probe for slow alkyl radical rearrangements.
