AbstractBacterial glycomes and their associated metabolic and carbohydrate processing enzymes critical for virulence expression are identified and exploited as targets for drug discovery, glyco-engineering, vaccine design, and diagnosis of disease. Mass spectrometry (MS) in combination with modern separation techniques is one of the most powerful and versatile techniques for the structural analysis and characterization of carbohydrate interactions in microbial virulence. Owing to recent developments in MS, the profiling of glycans enables the characterization of bacterial glycomes, further advances in MS technologies are anticipated to contribute to glycomics. This chapter outlines the current development and applications of MS for bacterial glycomics studies.
