AbstractRecently, systems have been emerging that attempt to combine the capability of computer graphics and computer modelling with roles that the computer has been offering in conventional areas. It is in some of these applications, and there are many in the building sciences, that much larger productivity increases are possible; herein lies the greatest future for computer graphics in the building field. The areas where the greatest advances are being made involve the integration of computer modelling with all aspects of the building design process, specifically, where numerical techniques are presently being used and also in the area of planning and facilities management. Associated with these applications, data bases can be created that contain not just the drawings but also physical representation of all building components. It is this information that can be manipulated and transferred by designers. The potential impact on engineering and architectural activities is enormous, but so too are the gains to be obtained by the building industry.
