AbstractThe absorption spectrum, fluorescence and kinetics of di(p-methylphenyl)methylene have been examined using laser photolysis techniques. In acetonitrile the excited carbene has a lifetime of 5.6 ns at room temperature and reacts with carbon tetrachloride with k = 1.1 × 10^9 M^−1 s^−1. The absorption of the excited carbene shows λmax = 370 nm, while its fluorescence peaks at = 517 nm.
