AbstractThe fire in the unsprinklered 36-story Cook County Administration Building on October 17, 2003, resulted in 6 fatalities and a dozen injuries. This report provides the results of a human behaviour study using a questionnaire survey to gain an understanding of the existing conditions in the building prior to the fire, the past training and occupant awareness of the evacuation procedure, and to document the occupants' behaviour and evacuation on the day of the fire. The report analyzes the questionnaire responses and discusses ways of improving safety in high-rise office buildings.
