Optimal hull forms from analysis of seakeeping data

AbstractThis report describes an attempt to identify the optimum design for seakeeping from a parametric series of hull forms. The predicted performance of the hulls, as a function of design, speed and the non-dimensional zero crossing period for sea state, was stored as a vector. Loss functions were used to assign a numerical value to the consequence of each response, and the location of the minimum averaged loss function over all possible sea states (within the grid of designs tested) was determined. The probability distribution for zero crossing period for a given sea area was taken from published data.
