AbstractA parametric analysis was conducted for a series of horizontal axis tidal turbines (HATT), prototyped for the inflow velocity profile and annual inflow probability distribution of the Bay of Fundy, Minas Passage, Nova Scotia, Canada. Motion and geometry parameters of the HATT series were covered in the optimization process. Data for the parametric analysis were obtained using a proprietary software tool that was validated for both horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWT) and HATT. It was found that the total annual energy production was most sensitive to variations in pitch value and distribution especially at the blade tips. It was found also that a relatively large rotor solidity is required for optimum energy generation at very small inflow speeds.
