AbstractSay, someone out in a boat on a lake shouts Help! Whether that person is, in fact, helped depends on the language understood by potential listeners and on whether the sound carries far enough. So it is with detecting leaks in water-carrying pipes. They too, in a sense, shout (emit signals), ?The leak is here!? There are various means of detecting the signals. Of them, the leak noise correlator seems to be the most widely used means. Some other means are listening rods, tracer gas, infra-red cameras. Detection is a lot easier with metal pipes. Plastic pipes shout at a frequency that can be difficult to hear, so to speak
