AbstractThe increase in local area networks (LANs) cable loads in building void spaces has raised concerns about their impact on life safety. Research was done to examine the impact of exposed LAN cables installed in above-ceiling return air plenums. The work included surveys in North American buildings to determine the type and quantities of cable in return air plenums and fire scenarios that could potentially ignite the cables. It also included fire tests performed at small, medium and full scales. The paper provides the results of bench and medium-scale tests made to investigate the effect of both thermal and flame exposure on communication cables.
