AbstractSteep Rock Lake, in Western Ontario, was drained in 1943-44 by means of a large pumping operation. As the water line dropped, serious movements of the exposed soil occurred. Study of these, in connection with the development of the open pit from which the valuable iron ore was to be mined, led to an extensive soil investigation. The varved "clays" revealed by the mining operations with a total thickness of over 100 feet were studied first with engineering objectives in view. These "soil mechanics" investigations led to a detailed study of the soil in individual varves. Results confirm several features of the well-known seasonal theory of deposition but raise some questions which suggest the desirability of carrying still further this laboratory soil research.
