AbstractThe ignition propensity of three brands of Kreteks (the Djarum Super, the Djarum Special, and the Djarum Black) was determined through a series of tests in accordance with the ASTM E2187-04 "Standard Test Method for Measuring the Ignition Strength of Cigarettes". The relative ignition strength was determined by observing the percentage of the cigarettes that burned their full length. In addition, the length of the remaining tobacco column was measured for all those cigarettes that self-extinguished during the test.Test results showed that the Djarum Super and the Djarum Black had relatively high numbers of full-length burns. The Djarum Super Kretek cigarettes burned their full length 75%, 95% and 100% of the time, and the Djarum Black Kretek cigarettes burned their full length 92.5%, 92.5% and 100% of the time, on the 15-layer, 10-layer and 3-layer assemblies, respectively.
