Subjectice arching; discrete elements; numerical simulation
AbstractDiscrete elements are used to model the flow of wind-driven pack ice around bridge piers. Floe size, ice concentration, pier spacing and interfloe friction were varied. A general equation is developed relating the critical ice concentration, above which arch is likely, to the other parameters.
