AbstractThe stress optical coefficient of plate glass and fused silica, and the birefringence of quartz have been shown to be reduced to a single curve against wavelength if normalised at the same wavelength. In addition, it is shown that the refractive indices of these materials also have a common normalised spectral characteristic. A simple dispersion formula has been developed for the birefringence, on the basis of absorption bands in vacuum ultraviolet and medium infrared, consisting of two basic factors, of which the first describes the dispersion of the refractive indices.
