AbstractDouble Torsion geometry, with confining compressive stress applied perpendicular to crack plane, was used to study crack growth into a zone of increasing compressive stress. Instead of determining if resulting crack length was influenced by compressive stress, it was found that the compressive stress changed the direction of the crack growth.
